On Tuesday 1st December, the Digital Leaders of Riddlesdown Collegiate attended Teen Tech at the Copper Box Arena (the venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics & 2012 Summer Paralympics).
The event lasted the whole day and we enjoyed it very much and also learned a lot of cool things. First, we did the DIY Your Own Invention Challenge, for this we had to make an invention that would improve the safety or standard of living. We chose to make a kitchen automation system that would enable your hob, oven, microwave or any other kitchen appliance that you can think of to be controlled by a smartphone, tablet and website. After making the designs and circuit diagrams & filling out some sheets on who the product targeted, how it looked, etc, we had to present our work in the form of a product pitch while being judged on our idea & our creativity. We did win one award & it was very fun to do.
After this we went on to visit some stands put up by different companies in the science & technology sector. We visited the stands of Fire Tech, Bloomberg, National Rail, and a few other companies as well.
The experience at Bloomberg was especially fun, we had to function as a human computer working in a group to sort a bunch of tweets into:
Then we broke out to visit stands of our choice, after which we headed for lunch. There were many different companies presenting & there was a robots stand, which had RoboThespian and NAO (pronounced "now") showing off their skills to the audience.
At another stand we saw there were speakers producing directed sound (this allows us to focus sound at exactly one point and allow the target to hear the sound only in that specific area) by means of using ultrasonic sound waves (wavelength at ~20 kHz) to send sound & then our ear amazingly demodulates these high frequencies to hear whatever is being played on the speakers, without the person next to us being able to hear it!
They also had an invisibility cloak, which reflected blue light off a grey cloth (the cloak), then the computer removed all that was blue in the picture (including the Aquila students' ties!).
There were many other such stands and although we didn't have time to visit all of them, it was very exciting!
A trip to Bloomberg's headquarters!! We get to visit Bloomberg sometime soon & get a view of their internal workings, and possibly even get a coding tutorial! :-)
We enjoyed the day at Teen Tech City in London very much and we hope to go again, sometime.

The experience at Bloomberg was especially fun, we had to function as a human computer working in a group to sort a bunch of tweets into:
- the subject of the tweet (what movie it was about)
- the adjective(s) used to describe the movie (good or bad)

At the end of the day, there was a prize distribution:
Due to our presentation & amount of tweets scanned our team won a prize from Bloomberg and that was...A trip to Bloomberg's headquarters!! We get to visit Bloomberg sometime soon & get a view of their internal workings, and possibly even get a coding tutorial! :-)
